Modigliani's portraits and nudes are known for their asymmetry of composition, elongation of the figure, and simplification of outline, which reflect the style of his sculpture. By minimizing chiaroscuro, he achieved a sculptural quality through the strength of his contours and the richness of juxtaposed colors. His work also reflects his lifelong admiration for Italian Renaissance masters, as well as the influence of Paul Cézanne and Brancusi.
In 1917, Modigliani began painting a series of female nudes, which are among his best works. These paintings feature warm, glowing colors and sensuous, rounded forms. Unfortunately, Modigliani died of tuberculosis at the young age of 35. His legacy lives on as a master of modern art who deftly blended influences from different traditions and created a unique and recognizable style.
