This is a sculpture of the Greek god Poseidon. Poseidon was the great Olympian god of the sea, rivers, flood and drought, earthquakes, and horses. He was depicted as a mature man of sturdy build with a dark beard, holding a trident. The symbol of Poseidon`s power was the trident, or a spear with three points, with which he used to shatter rocks, to call forth or subdue storms, to shake the earth, and the like. Here he can be envisioned stepping out of the waves of the Mediterranean to sun himself on a rock. He holds his trident and is accompanied by a dolphin. He admires his kingdom from the rock on which he perched himself. This sculpture truly captures the strength and wisdom of the sea god. This brown patina is handmade and was cast using the "lost wax method." He is mounted on a marble base and is signed P. Phidias.
